Predictive discovery of
tomorrow's materials

We combine novel AI techniques with deep materials science expertise to accelerate the discovery and commercialization of next-generation materials.

AI-powered materials science

Throughout human histories, materials have defined eras: the bronze age, the iron age, the silicon age.

We are alqem, a company born in Munich and Coimbra with the belief that AI is the key to unlock the next materials era. Our goal is to discover and commercialize the next breakthrough materials for industries.

Most of the materials powering today's technologies were discovered decades ago. Humans have only ever discovered about 50,000 to 100,000 crystalline materials out of a search space that is effectively infinite. Building on our decades of experience in building materials databases, synthesis, and commercialization, we are well positioned to win the race to find the next breakthrough materials.

One of our focuses is to find advanced permanent magnets that perform at high temperatures, are non corrosive and most importantly, can be produced without reliance on single sourced rare earth elements. Discoveries here would address today's supply chain resilience and technological challenges for automotive, wind turbine, robotics and electronics industries. We are also inspired by technological advances that could be unlocked when scientists and engineers are no longer bound by the constraints of existing materials.

Who we are

Our founding team came together with a shared vision to create new materials that change the world for the better, fast. Milan and Tiago met as collaborators at SuperC, a trans-Atlantic academic consortium with the goal to find room temperature superconductors. Hanh joined the team after her corporate career in the chemicals and energy industry where she led commercial, business and project developments. They work with a growing team of brilliant scientists who push computational and physical scientific boundaries every day.

Hanh Nguyen CEO

A chemicals and energy executive with 15+ years at McKinsey, Unilever, and OCI Global.

Tiago Cerqueira

A pioneer in AI-driven materials modeling who built the foundational Alexandria database used by researchers worldwide.

Milan Allan

A professor at LMU Munich, working on quantum materials and microscopy, and co-founder of quantum startup Quantamap.
